Job Summary and
Responsibilities:
The Nurse Manager is designated as the leader for the specified patient care area, the patient population of that area, and assigned staff in order to achieve desired outcomes. This position assumes responsibility and accountability for systems function, staff performance, and patient care during hours of operation.
1. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center''s Managerial Competencies.
2. Monitors Standards of Practice to ensure compliance with codes of internal and external regulatory and accrediting agencies, including:
a. Joint Commission
b. NJS and Federal Codes (i.e. DOH, OSHA)
c. Professional Review Organizations.
3. Ensures adherence to legal requirements relating to:
a. Risk Management
b. Patient Bill of Rights
c. Other Regulatory Agencies
4. Provides for the execution of outcomes based practice, and directs staff in its application.
5. Provides input for education programs through assessment of staff needs.
6. Evaluates the level of care provided by the unit staff.
7. Promotes Medical Center objectives for patient satisfaction through communication of data and the implementation of methods to sustain or resolve patient satisfaction issues.
8. Creates and monitors unit based indicators as mandated or necessary, integrating functions of standards. development, continuing education, credentialing, performance appraisal, concurrent monitoring, utilization review, risk management, and active problem identification.
9. Acts as a Retention Officer for areas of responsibility and the department as a whole and implements strategies directed towards retention and recruitment of all nursing and non-nursing employees.
10. Demonstrates leadership skills:
a. Establishes a mutually supportive relationship will all partners in care.
b. Maintains a professional relationship with:
i. Hospital Administrators
ii. Medical Staff
iii. Department Heads
11. Utilizes effective communication skills.
12. Is responsive to staff needs and offers guidance in solving practice issues when consulted through the performance process.
13. Responsible for own professional growth.
14. Participates in development and implementation of programs related to performance improvement activities.
15. Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
Working Conditions: Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 10 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. Graduate of a NLN/AACN accredited program in nursing.
2. Bachelor''s degree in nursing; working on Master''s degree.
3. Minimum of 2 years experience in relevant patient care setting, or as regulations dictate.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
2. Nurse Executive (NE-BC) to be obtained within 3 years.
3. Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
